Root planing

When the gums become inflamed or plaque builds up below the gum line, a simple cleaning is no longer enough. Root planing, also called deep scaling, is an essential non-surgical treatment to stop the progression of gum disease and restore a healthy environment around the teeth.

This treatment reduces inflammation, stabilizes periodontal health and prevents periodontitis from progressing.

What is root planing?

Root planing involves deep cleaning of the periodontal pockets — the space that forms between the tooth and the gum when the gum becomes inflamed or pulls away slightly. The treatment aims to:

  • Remove plaque and tartar below the gum line
  • Smooth the root surfaces so plaque can’t reattach
  • Reduce inflammation and promote healing
  • Allow the gums to reattach to the tooth
  • Prevent periodontal disease from progressing

Local anesthesia is required

To ensure a comfortable treatment, local dental anesthesia is given before starting. It numbs the area and makes the procedure completely painless.

Why would I need root planing?

Root planing is recommended when the gums show signs of periodontal disease. The most common causes include:

1. Plaque and tartar buildup

When plaque isn’t removed regularly, it mineralizes and forms tartar that works its way under the gum.

2. Untreated gingivitis

Without treatment, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced disease.

3. Periodontal pockets

Inflammation creates a space where bacteria accumulate, making things worse.

4. Smoking

Tobacco reduces the gums’ ability to heal and promotes inflammation.

5. Genetic or systemic factors

Some people are more at risk because of their genetics, diseases such as diabetes or certain medications.

6. Insufficient oral hygiene

Incomplete brushing or not flossing allows plaque to settle in for good.

How does the treatment work?

  1. Complete gum assessment
Pocket measurements, X-rays if needed, analysis of the inflammation.
  2. Local anesthesia
The area is numbed to ensure a comfortable treatment.
  3. Deep cleaning
Removal of tartar and bacteria below the gum line with specialized instruments.
  4. Root planing
Careful smoothing of the root surfaces to promote healing.
  5. Personalized instructions
Hygiene advice tailored to maintain the results.
  6. Periodontal follow-up
Check of healing and pocket reduction.

Healthy gums for a lasting smile

Root planing is an effective, gentle and preventive way to stop gum disease from progressing. Combined with good daily hygiene and regular visits, it contributes to the longevity and stability of your smile.

What are the signs that root planing might be needed?

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Gum recession
  • Slightly loose teeth
  • Tartar below the gum line

A periodontal exam measures the depth of the pockets and determines whether root planing is indicated.

The benefits of root planing

  • Less inflammation and bleeding
  • Shallower pockets
  • Healthier gums
  • Stabilized periodontal disease
  • Prevention of bone and tooth loss
  • Fresher breath
  • Greater everyday comfort

This treatment is an essential pillar of preserving your teeth and keeping your mouth healthy.
