Q&A

Whitening my teeth

How can I whiten my teeth with a single treatment?

With a single in-clinic treatment, you can considerably improve the whiteness of your teeth.

Our dentists use two processes:

  • Chemical whitening, which changes the internal colour of the teeth;
  • Mechanical whitening, which removes stains from the surface of the teeth.

However, the whitening must then be continued at home to guarantee the results.

What does the treatment involve?

Chemical whitening involves applying a peroxide-based gel to the teeth to remove unwanted discolouration. In contact with the teeth, the peroxide eliminates the pigments accumulated in the enamel and dentin to change their colour.

What are the side effects of teeth whitening?

Some side effects can be associated with chemical teeth whitening, whatever the method used.

  • Tooth hypersensitivity, which can be caused by the whitening product.
  • Gum or throat irritation due to a poorly fitting tray or swallowing the whitening product.
  • Jaw joint discomfort related to wearing the trays.

What causes teeth to yellow?

Over time, enamel, the outer layer of the teeth, tends to thin: the dentin underneath is then more and more exposed. Since dentin is naturally yellowish, this affects the colour of the teeth, making them look more yellow or greyish.

Cigarette smoke, coffee, red wine, tea and certain foods cause stains that become embedded in the teeth over the years.

As we age, it is therefore normal for teeth to become darker.

Whitening strips vs. in-office whitening: which should I choose?

Drugstore whitening strips can lighten teeth slightly, but their results remain limited. Their concentration of whitening agent is low and their one-size-fits-all format doesn’t fit the teeth perfectly, which often leads to uneven, shorter-lasting whitening.

In contrast, in-office treatments use much more powerful and safer products, applied under professional supervision. The trays are custom-made, ensuring an even, fast result that lasts. The dentist can also adjust the treatment to your sensitivity and protect your gums.

In short:

  • Strips: inexpensive, easy to use, moderate results.
  • Dental office: more effective, safer, visible and lasting results.

For a truly whiter, more even smile, professional whitening remains the most reliable solution.
